On The Trails

ON THE TRAILS is a new page and is in addition to the Trails Page.

ON THE TRAILS will be information on what's happening on the trails throughout the season. Trailmasters Angelo and George will keep you up to date on trail conditions and they will also need your feedback with any suggestions.

The Trails Page is more of a permanent posting about our trail system, such as maps, safety and other important information people should know about our trails.

TRAIL UPDATE

WINTER 2009 SEASON

E-ville Riders Snowmobile Club
12/24/2009

Hi Everyone

The trails have 6 to 8 inches of snow, today. There was supposed to be a 12 inches snowfall yesterday but only an 1 inch fell in Elliottsville. The temperature today is in the 40's and everything is melting. Don't expect much snowmobiling but as you know Elliottsville is unpredictable and things can change quickly. Keep checking.

This weekend there will be a group working opening trails, contact Mike for information. I am in MA for the holidays and will be back in Maine shortly after.
I will give weekly up-dates by email, web page and facebook when I return.

Hi Everyone
I am back in MA that's why there is a lack of Trail Reports. The update I have received today is plenty of snow on the trails and hard packed with today's temperature 35 and sunny.

Hi Everyone

You will find many new signs and directions along the trails, it wasn't easy with the deep snow. We got it done with the help of my granddaughter, Katie and her friends, John and Cody.

LUNCH ON THE TRAIL

2/27/2009

Hi Everyone,

We have been digging out of the 30+ inches of snow. Everyone is shoveling their roofs because of the expected rain tonight. We could not work on the trails till the snow settled. We tried today, the Bunny Trail and the Old Onawa Rd Trail are open. The snow was so deep with huge drifts, it took all day to open these 2 trails. Many of the drifts had to be shoveled before we could continue. Mike, Patty and George were out all day. Kerne and myself out in the afternoon with them. It is raining now and we hope it will settle the snow so we can open the rest of the trails. Much time is spent digging out the sleds. The snow is so deep in places we had to pack it down with snowshoes to continue..

Sorry for the poor pictures they were taken at dusk.      WE NEED A GROOMER !

Hi Everyone

Wednesday night and all day Thursday, we had rain with the temperature in the 40's causing us to loose about 18 inches of snow.

Today, the temperature has dropped and the melting has stopped, we still have snowmobiling.  There hasn't been much traffic on the trails since I groomed them.

Be careful of moose on the Kings Cross Over Trail, they are using it for their private walkway.

Caution, the lakes might have slush on them, be careful not to get bogged down.

Reminder, Ron & Sandy Ahlquist are planning to have the club house open Sat & Sun morning. So, stop in for coffee and donuts.

Check the web page for the activities planned for the week. www.E-VilleMaine.com

E-Ville Trail Up-Date 2/5/2009

Hi Everyone,

The weather here is cold, colder and colderrrrrrrrrr!  Last night, it was 15 below and today only 5 above zero, so I stayed in and did some work here.

I was out grooming on Wednesday and have done the C&E Trailhead Trail, Bunny Trail, Old Onawa Trail all the way to the lake ( Onawa Lake is hard going due to the heavy winds across the lake ), Kings Crossover Trail from the Old Onawa Trail all the way to Cow Yard Falls and the Buttermilk Trail from Cow Yard Falls all the way to Buttermilk ( the snow on Buttermilk is deep ).

I will be out early tomorrow to finish the trails.  Ewen Farnum has volunteered to help me groom and put up signs.

IF ANYONE IS INTERESTED IN SEEING WHERE I AM GROOMING CLICK ON THE LINK BELOW AND YOU CAN TRACK ME BY SATELLITE.

Mike   & George have been working on the trail to Monson and the going is slow with the deep snow. They have been walking part of the trail on snowshoes to pack down the snow and then the next day go over it with a sled.  Mike will have some help tomorrow to work on it.  Anyone who wants to help, contact Mike ( we will be working on it for the next couple of weeks )

REMEMBER ALL SLEDS MUST STOP BEFORE CROSSING THE TRACKS AT ONAWA & BENSON CROSSINGS

E-Ville Riders Trail Up-Date 1/30/2009

Hi Everyone

Not all trails have been open yet, we got 15 to 20 inches of snow depending where you are on the trails.

Today, Ron & Carl Ahlquist were going to start opening the Long Pond Trail and it should be open by Saturday morning.

I was out all day and have the Bunny Trail, Kings Cross Over, Benson Brownville Trail, Green Point and the Buttermilk Trails open. The Parlin and the Old Onawa Rd trail still need to be opened.

The deep snow and the drifting over the trails make it slow going and difficult to stay on the trail, I got stuck 4 times.

Until we can get some help widening the trails, you should stay close to the center of the trail where the snow is packed down and not off to the sides where the snow is deep and soft.

Watch out for Moose they have been getting up on the trails and even bedding down on the trail.
The slab wood on Cow Yard Falls Bridge is working out well.

E-Ville Riders Trail Up-Date 1/22/2009
Hi Everyone,

All trails are open and in great shape.
Thanks to the help of Sandy & Ron Ahlquist who broke open the Long Pond Trail and the trail  across Onawa.

The rest of the trails are open and most have been leveled.

Be careful on the Kings Crossover going down through the woods, the Moose are in there and have been on the trails and breaking up the trail.

The Cow Yard Bridge has been repaired to hold the snow on it rather than it falling through the holes, slab wood has been put down. Go slow over the Bridge until the snow sets and packs down.

Hi Everyone

Just to let you know if your planning to come up snowmobiling, be sure to have the extra clothing with you.
The weather here is extremely cold, 6:00 am here at the lodge is 28 below zero and no wind.

Remember we have the Weather Center on our web page

1/15/2009

Hi Everyone

I have not been out on the trails this week, been busy making signs for the trails. Mike was out today and said the trails have been groomed and in great shape.

IMPORTANT NOTE
Snowmobilers all over have been having problems and have been blowing their engines. The reason is the 10% of Ethanol in regular gas. We have spoken to some dealers and they all say that an additive has to be put into the gas if you are using regular. The best thing everyone can do is contact the dealer that services your sled and ask him what you should use and the amount. It is possible that if you use premium gas you will not have to add an additive. The ethanol is causing moisture in the gas and dry gas alone will not correct the problem. The additives should be used in all your other equipment.

I could use some help Saturday after the meeting putting up signs, if you can help let me know and bring your screwgun.

Thanks
Angelo

Hi Everyone & Happy New Year

I am back in Maine and started the year off by getting stuck breaking trails,  I'll explain more about it when I get back to talking about survival.

Wednesday, we got 8 inches of snow.  Already, half of our trails have been broken open, the others will be open for the weekend. The snow is dry and there is no problem going through it. The Trestle Trail is in bad shape. We just didn't have time to work on it in the good weather so we will not maintain it this winter ( that's where I slid off the trail). That trail will be a priority next summer.

I appreciate all the work everyone did helping to maintain the trails while I was gone for the Holidays.

Thanks
Angelo

12/24/2008

Hi Everyone & Happy Holidays

The beginning of the week Elliottsville got 2 feet of fluffy snow and have been waiting for it to settle before trails can be broken.

I'm away for the Holidays and won't be back till after New Years.  Mike will start  breaking some trails over the weekend.  Anyone wishing to help should contact Mike King.
IMPORTANT NOTE
The Railroad put in a crossing for us at Benson Crossing. All sleds must come to a complete stop before crossing the tracks. This is a dangerous spot and the trains come by fast and do not always blow there horn.  PLEASE BE CAREFUL!

Thanks

GETTING READY FOR 2009 SEASON

Angelo Working on the Long Pond Trail

Angelo & Ron Covered the opening's on the Long Pond Bridge so the snow will stay on the bridge

and make it safe when travailing over it

Ron installing signs on the Long Pond Trail

November 16 2008, Mike and Angelo were out building a bridge but could not move a boulder estimated at a 1 1/2 tons. Wondering what to do, Mike said to Angelo "look" and over the hill came ATVs. It was Richard and his gang from Portland, up hunting. They all pitched in to help and in no time the boulder was moved to a new resting place. Thanks guys!!.

We are strategically installing wood coverings over our signs along our trails to protect them from the weather. These strategic signs will not only give directions in the near future, they are also numbered and will have a GPS coordinate. Our web page and maps will have legends of these strategic signs. In case of any emergency you will be able to let help know where you are on the trail by giving them the number closest to you.

The first suggestion the trailmasters received came from from Patty King. She suggested that we have Telephone Booths along the trail to make phone calls.  WOW! Telephone Booths! Is that possible? Yes, it is! Just think about it!  We will have some before the winter is over.  GREAT IDEA PATTY!!
